Jaén is the province with largest surface area of protected natural spaces in Spain, and boasts over 300,000 hectares of natural heritage. The wealth of botany, fauna and geology make it the ideal place for the nature lover.

The vast, unspoilt extent of the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Nature Reserve, where rocky limestone peaks rise above dense pine forests and clear mountain streams, including the source of the great Guadalquivir River. Here you can observe birds of prey like the bearded vulture, which for the first time in history since its disappearance, returned to reproduce in this area in 2015.

The excellent condition of the Mediterranean forest in the Sierra de Andújar and Despeñaperros Nature Reserves provides some of the last refuges for the greatly threatened Iberian lynx, in grave danger of extinction. Birds of prey like the golden eagle and the black vulture also deserve special mention.

The medieval, mountain castles in the Sierra Mágina Nature Reserve make it an excellent place for observing the different peaks in the mountain range, which are covered in snow in the winter.
